Health, Family, and Purpose — The Real Retirement Equation

The Wake-Up Call

We thought we had retirement figured out — until my heart had other ideas. While we were back in USA for a family wedding, two heart attacks within a month changed everything we believed about health and safety. In Mexico, we had sunshine, friends, and peace, but when I needed urgent medical care, we discovered the hard truth: good healthcare isn’t just about quality; it’s about availability and speed.

That experience reshaped our priorities. We realized that no ocean view or perfect climate can replace peace of mind.

Fortunately, recovery was quick and complete.

What Health Really Means

In our working years, “health” often meant keeping up the pace — powering through, showing up, performing.
In retirement, it’s something else entirely. It’s energy, resilience, and the confidence that you can keep doing what you love.
Health is what makes the rest of retirement possible.

You don’t need to train like a 25-year-old, but you do need to move, eat well, and get regular checkups. The best gift you can give yourself — and your family — is staying well enough to share more years and more adventures together.

Family Ties

When we returned to the U.S., we came back not just for healthcare but for family. Kathy’s work, my soccer volunteering, and my 90-year-old mother’s company have become the anchors of our days.
There’s a deep satisfaction in being close to the people who know your history — and in being able to help each other through the next chapters.

The Real Equation

We used to think retirement success meant money + leisure.
Now we know it’s health + family + purpose.
The equation isn’t complicated, but it’s easy to forget when the brochures promise beaches and cocktails.

Your body, your people, and your sense of contribution — that’s the formula for lasting happiness.
